How Can IPT Help me?
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals who may be feeling low, depressed, or disconnected due to challenges in their relationships. If you're finding that your mood is affected by unfulfilling or strained connections with others—whether that's with a partner, family member, friend, or even in the workplace—IPT can offer meaningful support.
In the assessment phase of IPT, we work together to understand what has led you to seek help. Using the IPT framework, we'll explore how various aspects of your relationships may be contributing to your current struggles. The theory behind IPT identifies four key areas that often underlie feelings of sadness or depression:
Life is full of changes, and even when those changes are exciting (like becoming a parent, starting a new job, or retiring), they can also disrupt our relationships. These transitions can create feelings of isolation, stress, or disconnection. During IPT, we'll explore the emotional impact of these changes, help you understand how they’ve affected your relationships, and identify new ways to navigate this shift. Together, we’ll look for opportunities for growth and connection within the transition.
Grief is a deeply personal experience that can be difficult to process, whether it’s from losing someone close to you or the loss of a relationship. Sometimes, grief can feel “stuck,” and you might find it hard to move forward. IPT provides a safe space to talk through your relationship with the person you’ve lost, helping you to honor your feelings and process the loss in a healthy, productive way. We'll work together to help you find healing and emotional resolution.
Conflict in relationships can be draining, especially when it feels like you're stuck in a cycle with no resolution. Whether it’s a recurring disagreement with a partner, family member, or close friend, IPT can help you better understand the root of the conflict and how both you and the other person communicate. If appropriate, we can even involve the other person in some sessions to help facilitate open, respectful dialogue. Our goal is to help you develop strategies for resolving disputes, strengthening your relationship, and reducing emotional stress.
Do you often feel lonely despite being surrounded by people? Or perhaps you struggle with maintaining deep, meaningful friendships or romantic relationships? IPT’s “Sensitivities” focus area can help you explore why these connections may feel unfulfilling or why you might be experiencing difficulties in relating to others. We’ll explore your communication style, expectations of others, and any underlying patterns that might be affecting your ability to build or maintain fulfilling relationships. The aim is to help you foster more satisfying, authentic connections with those around you.
Through IPT, you’ll gain deeper insight into how your relationships impact your mood and well-being. You’ll learn practical strategies to improve communication, navigate transitions, and work through grief or conflict, ultimately creating more fulfilling and balanced relationships in your life. Together, we’ll collaborate to identify the best path forward for your emotional healing and growth.
